In 2026, Fire Emblem Engage is no longer the new tactical RPG on the block, but my endgame routine has not changed: if I see a dog in Elyos, I adopt it. The reason is simple. Refining weapons and supplying my army demands iron, steel, and silver ingots, and the Somniel's canine companions remain the easiest, most lucrative, and least stressful way to farm those materials. I do not need to donate gold to a country, I do not need to grind skirmishes, and I do not need to pray to the RNG gods for a lucky drop. I just need a battlefield with an adoptable dog and a free slot in the stables.

A Dog's World - Farming Iron, Steel, and Silver

Fire Emblem Engage understands that behind every great hero is a very, very good boy or girl. From iron to steel and steel to silver, my second army of canine companions is here to save the day. Canines are not the only way to farm precious earthen materials, but they are certainly the easiest and most lucrative source. I can also get materials as battle rewards, but who wants to grind when I can simply spend time with nature's most lovable creature?

Here is my exact routine:

  1. πŸ• Find a battle where the rewards show that a dog can be adopted.

  2. βš”οΈ Successfully complete the battle.

  3. πŸ” Explore the grounds of the battlefield afterward and look for orange dots on the mini-map.

  4. 🀝 If one of those dots is a dog, interact with it and choose to adopt it.

  5. 🏠 Return to the Somniel and go to the Stables door.

  6. 🐾 Place the dog into one of the five slots on the left window. This sends the dog out into the pasture.

  7. ✨ When I return from future battles, an ingot of a random type will be sparkling on the ground in front of the dog. I pick it up for a free ingot.

Each time I return from a battle, each pasture dog leaves one ingot of a random type: iron, steel, or silver. With five dogs, that is five chances per battle. If I am lucky, I can walk away with as many as five silver ingots after a single fight. That is absurd value for zero gold and almost zero effort. Adopting a dog does not even require investing in Donations. There are no monetary requirements or losses incurred by adopting a dog and exploiting this gimmick.

Exchanging For More Ingots

The benefit of the dog-farming method is that an excess of silver ingots can help balance the need for iron ingots in early gameplay. For each silver ingot found, I can exchange it for either nine steel or 90 iron. Although I do not recommend exchanging precious silver ingots constantly, this method makes the exchange far more feasible, especially on Normal and Hard modes.

Trade Result
1 Silver Ingot 9 Steel Ingots
1 Silver Ingot 90 Iron Ingots

I exchange ingots by speaking with the Smithy in the main plaza of the Somniel and selecting Exchanging. I first select the material I want, and then select the material I am willing to trade. In 2026, this remains one of the cleanest ways to fix a forge shortage without touching my gold reserves.

Battle Rewards And Donations - Additional Income

In addition to the dog-farming technique, I may also receive materials as a reward for completing battles. These materials can be found as items I can pick up on the battlefield after completing missions. Story mode missions will always have these materials in large quantities, almost always iron, on the battlefield. The amount skirmishes have is directly affected by the donation level of the country where the skirmish was completed. The higher the donation level, the more materials I may gain after a skirmish.

However, this also means I need to pay a large amount of gold to make this method of farming feasible. Gold is also a precious resource and necessary for forging weapons, so I would need to farm for both at the same time. That makes donation and skirmish farming inferior and more costly than simply adopting dogs.

Why This Still Matters In 2026

Even after every update and DLC wave, Fire Emblem Engage's material economy still rewards preparation. I still see players asking how to get silver ingots quickly, how to refine weapons without going broke, or how to keep their army supplied on higher difficulties. My answer is always the same: build a dog pasture. It is not glamorous, and it will not replace smart tactics, but it quietly solves one of the game's most annoying resource bottlenecks.

Method Cost Effort Yield My Verdict
Dog adoption None Low 1 random ingot per dog per battle; up to 5 silver Best overall
Story battle pickups None Low Large iron quantities Great early
Skirmish pickups Donation gold Medium to high Scales with donation level Costly
Smithy exchange Silver ingots Instant 1 silver = 9 steel or 90 iron Situational

Final Thoughts

Dogs are not the only way to farm for precious earthen materials, but they are the easiest and most lucrative source. If I see a dog, I adopt it. I bring it back to the Somniel, put it in the pasture, and let my second army of good boys and girls fund my war. That is the 2026 Fire Emblem Engage lesson I keep relearning: the best hero may save the world, but the best boy saves my forge. 🐢✨
